Simple and pure shear
Webb1 feb. 2010 · The classical problem of simple shear in nonlinear elasticity has played an important role as a basic pilot problem involving a homogeneous deformation that is rich enough to illustrate several key features of the nonlinear theory, most notably the presence of normal stress effects. In mechanics and geology, pure shear is a three-dimensional homogeneous flattening of a body. It is an example of irrotational strain in which body is elongated in one direction while being shortened perpendicularly. For soft materials, such as rubber, a strain state of pure shear is often used for characterizing hyperelastic and fracture mechanical behaviour. Pure shear is differentiated from simple shear in that pure shear involves no rigid body rotation.

WebbSimple shear and pure shear are considered as the most important modes in deformation of materials. While pure shear is an ideal deformation mode in metal forming operations ( Segal, 1995 ), simple shear is considered as an optimal mode of deformation for grain refinement via severe plastic deformation (SPD) ( Segal, 2002, 2006 ). Webb25 okt. 2002 · However, Al has an ideal pure shear strength that is 32% larger than that of Cu because it has a longer range of elastic strain before softening ( Fig. 1 B): x max / b p = 0.28 or γ max = 0.20 in Al, which are the displacement and the engineering shear strain at the maximum shear stress, respectively, versus x max / b p = 0.19 or γ max = 0.13 in …
