WebThe Native Americans known as the Miwok (or Mewuk) traditionally lived in central California. There were several different groups of Miwok. The largest group was the Sierra Miwok, who lived in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The Sierra Miwok had more than 100 villages when Europeans arrived in their territory. WebBefore Europeans arrived, Miwok village size varied from two dozen to several hundred individuals. Each village had a specific territory to assure that its need for food, clothing, and shelter would be met. The village was the primary political unit in Miwok life, though larger alliances existed between villages.
